Tete-e-Tete with C Sukumaran, Senior Director, Canon India
Canon is breaking boundaries and launching a flurry of good products for all walks of life. They recently launched the Canon EOS R5 C and we got an opportunity to interact with Mr. C Sukumaran, Senior Director, Consumer Systems Products and Imaging Communication Business, Canon India. We also threw a few scumbags his way and this is what he had to say.
- What is the main USP of the Canon EOS R5 C and how is it better than its predecessors? Who should buy it?
The Canon EOS R5 C is a game-changer for the film industry, bringing not only the uncompromising video quality of the Cinema EOS series, but also the unshakable image quality of the EOS R5. Unlike all its predecessors, the EOS R5 C is a high-quality, high-performance hybrid cinema model. It is the first Canon camera to provide internal 8K 60P Cinema RAW Light recording, enabling it to perform stunningly in a range of video production scenarios. With a built-in heat transfer fan, along with a patented heat transfer architecture that enables longer video recording, the EOS R5 C ensures a hassle-free long recording/usage process.

So this compact and versatile camera is the complete package. It is ideal for a wide range of applications where mobility plays a key role. These include journalism, documentary film, and fields that require cinema-level image quality, such as advertising and corporate video production. Through this launch, we also want to reach out to filmmakers especially targeting OTT platforms, production houses and creators/artists.
- What will the road map of India look like, will we see more innovations in the mirrorless category in 2022?

Our vision is to bring India-specific solutions that cater to evolving consumer needs while fueling passion for art. We are constantly working on consumer feedback to develop new products, optimize sales network and marketing investments, and explore new business opportunities.
Our areas of focus and marketing strategies are always in line with upcoming industry trends and new consumption patterns. For example, in the last five years, we have seen expansion in the professional segment supported by the growth of wedding photography in Tier-II, III and IV areas. We’re seeing this as a growing trend where professionals have picked up wedding photography because it helps them make more money, and we’re seeing them opt for full-frame mirrorless cameras and buy professional gear.

So it is a proof that the mirrorless industry in India is growing exponentially and is expected to grow even more steadily in the near future. Our efforts have resulted in us consistently securing the highest global share in the industry while witnessing maximum growth in our full-frame mirrorless segment. It is therefore our constant endeavor to meet the ever-evolving needs of our customers and strengthen our presence in the mirrorless segment this year.
- How is business affected by the advent of better smartphone cameras? Has there been any decline or is the call as strong as ever?
While this is primarily a grassroots issue, I also believe that smartphones have helped make photography even more popular. If you catch or see any advertisement for a mobile phone, it highlights the camera as its key feature. This, along with the proliferation of social media apps like Instagram, which thrives on photos, has pushed consumers to click more and more images. And as they embark on this pictorial journey, they begin to realize that there is a significant difference between taking photos on a phone and a professional camera. Photography is all about the details and that’s where they start to understand the limitations of mobile phone cameras when it comes to fine professional photos and hence they switch to professional cameras to get the much needed difference in quality.
However, the momentum we have seen in professional photography in India over the past few years has been very encouraging. Both our entry-level and mirrorless cameras were our best performing segments. This shows that demand for professional cameras in India is across segments, with entry-level cameras showing that more and more photography enthusiasts are taking the step to make photography a profession, and demand in the mirrorless segment showing that the industry is adapting quickly. changing technology.
- The demand for good video content is high now. How does Canon address this segment with its cameras and lenses? Does Canon run any special courses or classes to train filmmakers to be proficient in Canon’s new 4K video cameras? If so, how can one register for them?
At Canon, we are constantly striving to bring our customers the latest technology that not only enhances their photography and videography experience, but also allows them to innovate and experiment with the content they create. From time to time we organize training in the form of master classes for imaging enthusiasts under the guidance of our renowned specialists, Canon EOS Ambassadors. Organized in close collaboration with some of the best talent in the industry, these masterclasses aim to reach photography enthusiasts across the country by adopting a hyperlocal approach to hosting webinars.

We are also actively engaging through Instagram Live sessions and late last year we even created an immersive experience like never before in South India called ‘Capture – The Heart of Action’. By setting up real dedicated zones at the event, we wanted to allow customers to experience the products first-hand in an immersive environment, an aspect we’ve all honestly been missing over the past two years. Buying professional imaging equipment requires a significant investment, and we want to assure our customers not only of best-in-class technology by showcasing our products, but also by providing them with much-needed guidance and training.
- Will we see pocket cameras for content creators in the future?
Over the past few years, vlogging has emerged as a new form of content creation and is gaining huge popularity and becoming a trend that everyone wants to follow. With the same in mind, we have launched the versatile EOS M50 Mark II. Ready with features such as those that allow content creators to live stream directly to YouTube by connecting to Wi-Fi, and allowing users to seamlessly create 4K quality videos in a variety of situations, the EOS M50 Mark II has won admiration among ‘vloggers’. ‘ community.
To further support content creators in creating engaging content and fuel their passion, we are working to create more innovative display products equipped with best-in-class features and a user-friendly interface at an affordable price for professional display devices.
- Any final comments you’d like to add?
In line with our corporate slogan of “Delighting You Always”, reinforced by cutting-edge technology, we will continue to improve our diverse display technologies. Based on our core optical technology, we are working to create an even stronger imaging system that meets the needs of increasingly diverse users and supports the spread of photo and video culture. We are working to expand our presence into new segments including educational technology, vlogging, OTT, preaching and virtual reality as we aim to be a one stop shop for all photography needs.
